Calling all supercar fans. General Motors is releasing the specs on its new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the results are not for the faint of heart. The 2015 Corvette Z06 will roar in with 650 horsepower. It will be the most powerful production car ever from GM.
According to information released today, the Z06's LT4 supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine is SAE certified at 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The horsepower rating is 29 percent greater than the LS7's 505 horsepower and even beats the ZR1's engine by 12 horses.
Jordan Lee, the chief engineer for small block engines, said in a statement "The new engine builds on the design strengths of our previous supercharged engine and leverages the technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray". When it was introduced at the North American International Auto Show, in January, the Z06 was said to complete the line-up of Corvettes.
It is a race car wrapped in luxury. It was described during its Detroit debut as the most track-capable Corvette ever. When it was first unveiled, Chevrolet promised that the new Z06 would have at least 625 horsepower. Today's announcement puts the new Z06 into contention with other so-called supercars like Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Maseratis. Chevrolet has also produced high-horsepower Camaros that are designed for track-capability.
The 2015 Z06 is not just for the racer at heart. It will feature a standard seven-speed manual transmission. It will also be available with an all-new paddle-shift eight speed automatic. Rarely are vehicles with this rate of horsepower available with automatic transmissions.
The new Z06 will be built at GM's Bowling Green Assembly Plant.
The 2015 Corvette Z06 goes on sale later this year. No word on how much the street rocket will cost.
