The Colorado Springs Police Department announced Monday afternoon that the body found Sunday morning in a parking lot behind a church had been stabbed to death. The El Paso County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide and identified the victim as 25-year-old Carlos Eduardo Zuasnabar. The investigation into his death is ongoing.
Police received the report of a possible dead body in a parking lot area on Academy Blvd, southwest of Austin Bluffs Pkwy shortly after 5 am on Sunday. The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that investigators were still on the scene later that morning when congregation members arrived at Vanguard Church. The pastor of the church reported that church staff, upon arriving early to the church and discovering that the investigation was taking place, made preparations to keep congregation members out of and away from the crime scene.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots in the area and residents of a nearby apartment complex were awakened to police knocking on their doors early Sunday morning to ask if they knew anything about the crime, the Gazette reported.
According to the police department, Zuasnabar's death is the 27th homicide this year in Colorado Springs. By this time last year, there had been 19 homicides in the city, the department stated.
