The Huffington Post reports that Jan Gorniak, who is the Franklin County Coroner, released a statement saying 53-year-old Castro was found unresponsive in his jail cell, hanging from a bed sheet that had been tied to a window hinge on September 3. Reports indicate that prison staff tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful. He was later pronounced died.
Earlier reports indicated that there were no drugs found in Castro's system at the time of his death.
Ariel Castro was arrested on May 6 in connection with the kidnappings of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus. He pleaded guilty to 329 charges including kidnapping, rape, and aggravated murder in connection with his crimes on July 26, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 1,000 years on August 1.
