It was the third straight time and sixth time this season Cornish received the top Canadian honour.
On Friday evening, Cornish, a native of New Westminster, British Columbia, rushed for 145 yards on 19 carries as the Stampeders improved to 13-3 with an impressive 27-13 road victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. The win guaranteed that the Stampeders will host a playoff game at McMahon Stadium in November.
The bigger surprise from the week 17 awards was that the voters selected Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Kory Sheets over Montreal Alouettes quarterback Troy Smith as the most outstanding player of the week. Sheets played well as he had 148 yards and a touchdown in a 35-14 Saskatchewan win over British Columbia, but it was a statement game for Smith, who was sensational in throwing 247 yards and three touchdowns in a dominant 36-5 win by Montreal over Hamilton.
In week 18, the Stampeders host the Saskatchewan Roughriders at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night. With a win, the Stampeders clinch first place in the Western Division. A portion of every ticket sold for Saturday and a portion of all merchandise sold will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
