A Cornell University researcher will be presented with the first "Extension Distinction Award" from the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV), according to a Friday announcement. Terry Bates, Ph. D, will be honored at the ASEV's national conference in Austin, TX, in June.

Bates, director of the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory (CLEREL), is a leading researcher whose innovative work on concord grapes in the Lake Erie Region has saved grape growers millions of dollars, especially with the new capability of mechanical crop estimation and thinning as a way to adjust to seasonal conditions.

"The objective of my research program and the research staff at the Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory is to help the New York grape juice industry reach their goal of producing maximum sustainable yield of high quality fruit through viticulture research and education," Bates says. "We work closely with producers and processors to identify research questions that are applicable to the industry.

"Those questions are then transformed into scientific research projects at the lab. We pass on the knowledge gained from those experiments to extension specialists, processor representatives, and grape producers in a variety of educational media, such as research publications, conferences, grower workshops, newsletters, and websites."

Bates also leads the extension effort at CLEREL, which includes a farm business management specialist and viticulturist. His collaborations have had a nationwide impact as well as a direct economic impact on the Lake Erie region grape producers. Additional information on the Lake Erie Regional Grape Program is available online from Cornell.
