Cord blood, cord tissue, or both

Many expectant parents know about their option to donate their cord blood stem cells or privately 'bank', saving them for their family. However, parents now also have the option to privately bank their baby's cord tissue, in addition to the cord blood. The cord tissue, from the wharton's jelly, is an abundant source of a different type of stem cell, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs have the ability to regenerate into other types of cells. Currently, there are no medical treatments, or human clinical studies, available using MSC, but experts feel they hold great potential. In fact, preclinical lab studies using MSCs from cord tissue have shown the potential to shrink tumors from lung cancer, slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease, & reduce the joint damage caused by arthritis. Additionally, MSCs could possibly help increase the number of engrafted cells in a transplant when used in conjunction with other stem cells. Going forward, experts feel that MSCs will play a critical role in the treatment of diseases such as:
• Parkinson’s Disease
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Liver Fibrois
• Lung Cancer
• Sports Injuries
• Juvenile Diabetes

Just like saving your baby’s cord blood, saving the cord tissue is simple, painless and safe for mom and baby. Leading family banking companies now offer the option of cord tissue collection. There is an additional fee for this service, in addition to the collection of the cord blood, approximately $1000. And, yearly storage fees are also applicable. Many companies offer 6 or 12 month payment plans. The processing and storage of cord tissue differs greatly from company to company, so parents should ask companies about their processing techniques and talk to their healthcare provider. Viacord is the only company that extracts cells from the perivascular region of the cord tissue and preserves the cord tissue stem cells in a treatment-ready format. Know your options - this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Unfortunately, cord tissue donation to a public bank is not a current option for parents. In celebration of national cord blood awareness month, Viacord is giving away a free cord blood collection. Enter on their facebook page. Promotion running through August.
