Copy-protected saves will work with PS3 Data Transfer Utility

The Playstation 3.

There has been some confusion as to whether or not the newly introduced Data Transfer Utility for the Playstation 3 will be able to transfer copy-protected saves from one system to another. Those who chose to update the optional 3.15 firmware will find the new tool under the System Settings category with the following description:

Transfers data that is saved on one PS3 system to another PS3 system. You can use this feature when replacing the PS3 system that you usually use with another PS3 system. Even saved data that is copy-protected can be transferred (moved).

So, despite Sony stating the opposite earlier, it looks like you can move your copy-protected saves from one Playstation 3 system to another.

When did Sony say you couldn't? I havn't seen that official statement. In fact on the EU PSBlog someone said you could, and people jumped down his throat saying stupid internet stuff like "FAIL". I havn't seen any offical word from Sony saying you couldn't. All I saw was people (users) on the Blogs complaining that you couldn't.

I don't see any problem if it's just moved, that it disappears from the other console.

actually they said you couldnt in the us blog. he replied 3-4 times about it.

They need to make this work wirelessly.

This is ridiculous, Sony really doesn't care.

I hate the fact that it can transfer my games, but not DLC. So all my Rock Band purchases have to be re-downloaded.

new breakthrough! got to the playstation asian website, and I found this:

"If the transferred data is saved game data that is copy-prohibited or data that is copyright-protected, it will be moved to the destination PS3™ system and deleted from the source PS3™ system."

huh, typical sony cant get their facts straight.
a simple yes or no how hard is that?
honestly, im starting to think their customer support line is run by a bunch of gorillas.
except when you talk to them at least you get the same answer.

Well Sony just seems to be smart with us. Even my PS3 says I can "move" but not "copy" so when we ask does it copy the content, the answer is technically no. It just moves it so it exists on the new PS3 and is gone from the old one.

This whole thing is a big bummer. you have to format the Destination HDD to transfer anything...

Looks to be how the system legally is set up with publishers and their rights. They appear to not care about these forums and what we have to say and are hampering our systems and what they should be able to do.

what good is this? you get a new ps3, change over everything to it, and then if IT dies everything is gone anyway. can back up the files but then your save protected files arent there either! very disappointing
