A 48-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed her autistic son and then killed herself in a wooded area in Gwinnett County.

And police said they have not yet determined the motive for the murder-suicide, which happened at 550 Rock Springs Road in Lawrenceville.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to Rock Springs Park after family members reported the mother and son missing, according to Gwinnett County police.

Mrs.Thuy Phan and her 24-year-old son, Mr. Vincent Phan, were last heard from earlier in the evening, police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. Mr. Phan was clinically diagnosed as being autistic.

“Family members were looking for them for a period of time and Mrs. Phan’s oldest son found her vehicle in Rock Springs Park,” Cpl. Ritter said.

Officers established a command post and assembled a search team to search the park.

Shortly after 10 p.m., members of the search team located their bodies in a wooded area off of a paved pathway.

Each appeared to have died from a gunshot wound, Cpl. Ritter said. Gwinnett County Crime Scene Unit and Homicide Unit responded to investigate the scene.

“At this time, investigators believe that Mrs. Phan shot her son and then turned the gun on herself,” Cpl. Ritter said.
