Cops: West Hempstead man drove drunk with child

A West Hempstead man was arrested Sunday night on felony drunken driving charges after police found him intoxicated behind the wheel with his 8-year-old daughter in the car, Nassau County police said.

James Chadderton, 51, of 263 Patton Place, was driving his 2005 Ford pickup truck on Front Street in Hempstead around 10:48 p.m. on Sunday, police said. Hempstead Village police officers noticed the vehicle driving in a "reckless manner” and initiated a traffic stop, according to a police news release.

When the officers approached the vehicle, they noticed Chadderton’s 8-year-old daughter seated in the rear section of the vehicle, said police. An investigation by officers resulted in Chadderton’s arrest on drunken driving charges.

The young girl was released to her mother, who showed up to the scene during the traffic stop, cops said. No injuries were reported.

Chadderton was taken into police custody and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree criminal contempt, driving while intoxicated and failure to stay in a single lane. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Monday.
