Cops: Sex offender committed lewd acts in Suffolk

A convicted sex offender will face a judge on Sunday and stand accused of making multiple acts of public lewdness in a variety of Suffolk neighborhoods over the past nine months, Suffolk County police said.

Angel Laporte, 54, of Selden, was arrested by Sixth Precinct officers at his home on Saturday night. Police said that around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, a woman entered the restroom at the Barnes and Noble book store located at 4000 E. Jericho Tpke. in E. Northport, and saw Laporte committing a lewd act. She yelled and he fled from the store.

When Second Squad detectives arrived and conducted an investigation, they determined the suspect to be Laporte, a registered sex offender in Connecticut. According to detectives, an investigation also revealed that Laporte committed public acts of lewdness at the Deer Park Public Library on Jan. 5, as well as lewd acts at the Commack Public Library and West Babylon Public Library on May 7, 2012.

In Connecticut, Laporte is currently wanted by the New Milford Police Department on three separate warrants for failing to register as a sex offender, detectives said. Authorities said the New Milford Police Department was notified on Saturday of Laporte’s arrest.

According to police, Special Victim’s Unit detectives are now conducting an investigation. Laporte was charged with four counts of public lewdness. He was held overnight in police custody at the Second Precinct in Huntington and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
