A Port Jefferson Station man was arrested Sunday night after cops found marijuana in his car when he was pulled over for speeding in Orange County, according to New York State Police.

James D. Murphy, 22, was arrested Dec. 1 and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and speeding. If convicted, he could face up to 15 days in jail.

Police said Murphy was pulled over in a Ford Explorer at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday for allegedly speeding on I-87 in the Town of Cornwall. When the trooper pulled over Murphy, he “detected a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle,” a news release said.

Cops later found a total of 27 grams of marijuana in the car and Murphy was arrested at the scene.

Authorities said he was released after being processed and issued a desk appearance ticket. He is due to appear in the Town of Cornwall Court on Dec. 18.
