A husband and wife from Long Island are under arrest and facing criminal charges after allegedly leaving their four children alone at home without food or heat for six days while they stayed at a hotel, Suffolk County police charged Feb. 13.

Police launched an investigation after Central Islip school system officials notified cops that the children – ages 4 to 15 – were left alone at the family’s home without food or heat, a police news release said.

Authorities said the children were left unsupervised for six consecutive days beginning last Friday. The parents, cops said, went to stay at a nearby hotel while their four children remained in the home with frigid temperatures and no food.

Police charged the parents – Tulio Ayala, 34, and Maria Ayala, 31 – with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. The two were scheduled to face a judge Thursday for arraignment on the misdemeanor offenses.

Officials said the children, who were not injured, were released to a family member’s custody.
