A New York man has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $35,000 in cash and jewelry from his own girlfriend while she was out of town, Nassau County police said April 9.

Jason Batista, 27, of Manhattan, is facing a second-degree burglary charge after the Monday night incident.

Police say he borrowed his 30-year-old girlfriend’s car and was returning the vehicle to her home on Waukena Avenue in Oceanside around 6:30 p.m. on Monday when he allegedly went into her house “without her permission.”

Investigators believe Batista may have used a duplicate key to get inside the house, where they say he stole $20,000 in jewelry and $15,000 in cash from a safe.

Police did not say what led detectives to suspect Batista, but said he surrendered himself to investigators on Tuesday at the Fourth Precinct in Hewlett.

After he was arrested, detectives recovered the cash and jewelry, a police news release said.

Batista is scheduled to face a judge Wednesday at First District Court in Hemsptead for arraignment.
