Cops: Man shot while driving in Middle Island

A Medford man was left critically injured Friday night after being shot while driving his car in Middle Island, Suffolk County police said.

Detectives said 20-year-old Brett McCoy had just dropped off a friend at a home in Middle Island, when he was driving along Adam Lane around 10:30 p.m. That’s when investigators said McCoy was shot once in the torso while still driving in his 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix.

The victim was able to flee the area of the shooting in his car and “was heading towards the Sixth Precinct for help,” a police news release said. While he was driving westbound on Middle Country Road, McCoy’s car left the roadway before striking a fence in front of the Coram Fire Department at 303 Middle Country Road.

Medical technicians from Coram Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the victim to Stony Brook University Hospital. According to police, McCoy underwent surgery and is now listed in critical condition.

An investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652 or anonymously call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
