A 29-year-old man was shot after he stole a Cherokee County deputy’s patrol vehicle and allegedly attempted to hit the officer Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, investigators identified the suspect as Mr. Josiah Farino, of Woodstock. They said his injuries were not life-threatening.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. when the deputy responded to a report of a possible wanted person walking on Ga. 92 near the Cobb County line, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy made contact with the suspect in the parking lot of Baxter’s Grocery, the sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.

The suspect fled on foot and the deputy chased around the building.

“The suspect then got into the deputy’s vehicle and drove at the deputy,” Lt. Baker said. “The deputy fired at the patrol car and the suspect fled westbound on Highway 92.”

The suspect struck another vehicle while traveling westbound and eventually came to a stop near Neese Road and Ga. 92.

Mr. Farino, who was shot during the encounter with the deputy, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he remained Wednesday.

Deputies have filed several charges against him including: aggravated assault on a police officer, theft by taking motor vehicle, interference with government property, fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, misdemeanor obstruction and felony obstruction.

The GBI has been called in to investigate according to the department's protocol regarding officer-involved shootings.
