A man allegedly struck and killed a woman with his vehicle as she was walking on a sidewalk late Sunday afternoon in southeast Atlanta.

And police said the man struck her intentionally.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified her as Ms. Marilyn Redding, 53, of Atlanta.

Around 5:30 p.m. officers responded to the intersection of Gartrell Street and Boulevard after getting a 911 call about a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, according to Atlanta police.

“When the officers arrived, they noticed an unresponsive female lying on the sidewalk next to a damaged and disabled vehicle, which was also on the sidewalk,” police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.

The woman was found dead at the scene, and the alleged driver, Mr. Alex Mason, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, Officer Jones said.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that the decedent and Mr. Mason were involved in an altercation some time before this incident,” Officer Jones said.

“It was reported by witnesses that Mr. Mason revved the engine in his vehicle, drove the vehicle towards the victim while she was walking on the sidewalk, jumped the curb with his vehicle and struck the victim.”

Mr. Mason had an altercation with the mother of 10 about three weeks ago, police told Channel 2 Action News.

Witnesses reportedly pulled Mr. Mason out of the car and held him until police arrived, the news station reported.

After investigators secured a search warrant for Mr. Mason, they took samples of his blood and performed a state administrator chemical breath test on Mr. Mason.

Mr. Mason, 63, was charged with murder and aggravated assault, police said.

Police have not released any details on his condition or his injuries.
