Cops: Man commits suicide at Suffolk police station

A Rocky Point man arrested on driving while ability impaired charges reportedly committed suicide inside a holding cell at the Seventh Precinct in Shirley on Wednesday evening, Suffolk County police said.

The 27-year-old man, whose name and address were not release by police, was arrested on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration, officials said in a news release. He was arrested around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, cops said.

After being arrested, the man was transported to the Seventh Precinct, where he was processed, booked, and being held overnight for a Thursday morning arraignment.

Around 7 p.m., officers found the man hanging inside a holding cell in the Shirley precinct. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the man’s death, authorities said. The police department did not release any further information.
