A Bellport woman was arrested on felony drug charges Saturday after officers discovered 92 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop in North Bellmore, Nassau County police said.
Mizzie Artis, 27, of 856 Provost Ave., was driving her 1999 Hyundai east on Columbus Ave. around 6 p.m. when First Precinct patrol officers spotted her talking on a cell phone and not wearing a seatbelt. The officers, who were driving in an unmarked vehicle, followed Artis onto Armand St. where she met with a male subject in a minivan, a police news release said.
As the officers drove past both vehicles, the minivan sped away, cops said. Artis also drove away, running a stop sign and failing to signal at a turn, according to police.
As the officers pulled over Artis, they noticed two large cardboard boxes in the car and smelled marijuana, cops said. A canine unit was called to the scene to conduct a narcotics search and officers discovered 92 pounds of marijuana from the box in the front seat and two additional boxes in the trunk of the car.
Artis was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana and several traffic infractions. According to court records, she was conditionally released to the custody of the Nassau County Probation Department after her arraignment on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead. She is due back in court on Jan. 30.
