A California man driving a BMW and armed with long gun allegedly robbed a business in Bibb County, but he eventually got caught Thursday afternoon after one of the victims decided to fight back.
The incident unfolded shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Game Stop at 4659 Presidential Pkwy., according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said a man entered the store, carrying a long gun inside of a black bag.
The suspect demanded money from the two customers, two employees, and then demanded money from the store’s cash register, the sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Sean DeFoe said. Once the suspect received an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled the store.
But then one of the victims ran out of the store in an attempt to get a description of the suspect’s vehicle, DeFoe said. The suspect jumped into the driver’s seat of his green BMW 528 where a female was waiting in the passenger seat.
When the suspect saw one of the robbery victims, he allegedly looked as if he was going for a weapon and the victim pulled out a handgun and began to fire several shots at the suspect’s vehicle, DeFoe said.
The suspects attempted to flee the parking lot by driving over a curb that was located behind the store, he said. But once the vehicle went over the curb, it went down a 4-to-5 foot embankment and wrecked in the parking lot of the Ashley’s Furniture Store. The vehicle’s tires were flattened and the vehicle was inoperable, he said.
Deputies took the man into custody and the woman was transported to the hospital for injuries that she received during the wreck, DeFoe said. No one else was injured during this incident.
The man, 34-year-old Javon Britton of Sacramento, Calif., was charged with armed robbery and transported to the Bibb County jail, DeFoe said. The woman, 23-year-old Maryann Davis, also from Sacramento, Calif., was released from the hospital and transported to jail where she will be facing a charge of armed robbery, DeFoe said.
