A 62-year-old BMW driver was killed and his passenger injured after he lost control of his vehicle and ended up striking a utility pole early Saturday morning in Cobb County.
Mr. Roosevelt Schimmel, of Marietta, died at the scene and investigators said alcohol and speed contributed to the deadly crash.
The crash happened around 1:20 a.m. while Mr. Schimmel was driving a black 2013 BMW M6 convertible westbound on Lower Roswell Road near Surrey Trail in Marietta, according to Cobb County police.
Investigators said he was negotiating a right curve when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and struck a mailbox.
“The vehicle continued down the sloped shoulder of the roadway and started to flip where it then came to a final rest against a utility pole,” police spokesman Mr. Mike Bowman said.
The front seat passenger, Ms. Michele Pierce, was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Cobb County Fire Department.
The 34-year-old Smyrna woman was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
Anyone with information about this crash that may assist investigators is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
