The checkpoints were operated from 11 p.m. on Aug. 30 to 3 a.m. on Aug. 31 along Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station and at the interaction of Jericho Turnpike and Elwood Road in East Northport, as part of an enhanced crackdown on drunken driving through the Labor Day weekend.
At the Port Jefferson Station checkpoint, vehicles were stopped by officers from the Suffolk County Police Department, New York State Police, Suffolk County Park Police and MTA Police Department. A total of 976 cars passed through the sobriety checkpoint, which resulted in 11 arrests, cops said. Nine of those individuals were charged with driving while intoxicated, including Robert Male, 33, of Medford, Stephen Walsh, 50, of South Setauket, Jessie Kemp, 26, of Coram, Alexandria Heller, 21, of Mastic, Nicholas Azzara, 18, of Shoerham, George Torres, 78, of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., Sabrina Brown, 35, of Mastic, Christina Harris, 29, of Coram and John Farrell, 23, of Port Jefferson.
In Port Jefferson Station, cops also busted Joseph Jackson, 24, of Brentwood, for driving while ability impaired by alcohol and Harry Themann, 55, of Medford, on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs.
At a second checkpoint in East Northport, officers stopped a total of 187 vehicles. Three drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated. They are: Daniel Zakarin, 26, of Dix Hills; Jonathan Doman, 23, of Dix Hills; and Shawn Gastaldo, 33, of Miller Place.
All 14 of the individuals arrested will be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
