Copper thief accidentally shoots himself near Kemp

Kemp, Texas- On Thursday, February 2, 2012 around noon, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office sent deputies to a 911 call about an accidental shooting. The deputies responded to the call at the 16000 block of County Road 4052 near Kemp.

Deputies found Tommy Wayne Jackson, 34, of Tool with a gunshot wound to his leg. Witnesses told deputies that Jackson was hunting birds on the property when he “tripped and shot himself in the leg.” That, however, was not the full story of why Jackson was at the location.

In January 2012, Jackson was arrested at the same property for criminal trespass and theft of copper. He was released on bond for that incident.

KCSO Investigators called for a helicopter to transport Jackson to a Dallas hospital. When they began searching the property on County Road 4052, they discovered “several containers loaded with copper at the point of exit on the property fence.” Sheriff’s Spokesperson Pat Laney said, “The weapon was also found on the property as well.”

Investigators from the KCSO do expect charges and arrests to be filed at a later date. The condition of Tommy Jackson is unknown at this time.
