No, seriously, EA has this insane idea to promote both science AND Mass Effect 3 at the same time! They will be launching copies of the game into space and anyone lucky enough to grab one of them will get an early crack at the game before the March 6th release date.
EA is dubbing this the "Space Edition" of the BioWare epic. The launches will be overseen by students in the High Altitude Balloon Club at Texas A&M University. After the equipment (which was donated to the University by EA) is all launched, the students will take their equipment up to Alaska where they will be studying the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.
I'm not much of a scientist, but apparently this will help predict weather patterns and help shield communication satalites from solar radiation more effectively. Ask one of those smart guys at A&M.
The launches will be in six different places over the next six days, starting today with the launch from San Francisco at 7:00 a.m. local time. The following launches will be in Las Vegas (2/24), New York (2/25), London (2/27), Paris (2/28) and Berlin (2/29).
Now, you're probably wondering how you can get your grubby little hands on one of these high flying games? EA has released a little video (left) that explains how you can. It involves tracking the flights using GPS and being there when they land. FINALLY a good use for that GPS app on your phone!
For those millions of you who aren't one of the lucky few to end up owning the Space Edition, Mass Effect 3 is set for release on March 6th. Pre-order your copy today or visit one of these stores around Anoka County to play the epic finale.
