The fourth edition of the Copa MX kicked off on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 with five games between La Liga MX teams and their Ascenso MX competition. Five of the six Clausura 2014 groups saw action on Tuesday, with all four teams from Group 2 playing.
Veracruz FC started the evening with a 4-0 thrashing over Lobos BUAP at the Cuauhtémoc Stadium. Cristian Borja opened scoring in the 28th minute of action with Hugo Cid Sanchez scoring six minutes later to give the Red Sharks the 2-0. Alfredo Moreno put the ball in the net in the 68th minute of the second half. Luis Antonio Martinez sealed the Puebla-based team’s fate with the final goal to end the game 4-0.
Correcaminos UAT took control of Group 2 after destroying Puebla FC 4-1 at the Marte R. Gomez Stadium. Eder Pacheco put the first goal in the net with Roberto Nurse adding the second for the roadrunners. Carlos Guzman scored the first for the visiting team. Sergio Rosas added Correcaminos’ third goal, all in the first 21 minutes of play. To the camoteros’ misfortune, Saul Villalobos scored in his own net for the final 4-1.
At the Alfonso Lastras Ramirez stadium, Tigres UANL defeated Atletico San Luis 1-0. U.S. international Jose Torres scored the only goal of the game in the 7th minute. At halftime the local fans and the Monterrey fans had an encounter that forced the visiting supporters to invade the field for protection. The game was delayed 25 minutes before the players were allowed back on the pitch. Tigres won 1-0.
CF Monterrey took down Altamira FC 1-0 at the Tecnologico Stadium. Othoniel Arce scored the only goal of the game in the 45th minute.
Atlas FC had a close one at the Jalisco Stadium when they took on Necaxa. The visiting Hydrorayos scored in the 6th minute of play from the penalty spot. Jesus Rodriguez took the shot that scared the rojinegros fans for several minutes. Martin Barragan closed the gap for the final 1-1 as Atlas continues their struggles.
The only game between Ascenso MX teams took place at the 3 de marzo Stadium in Guadalajara. Dorados de Sinaloa defeated Estudiantes Tecos UAG 3-1. Edgar Villegas, Alberto Garcia and former Xolos player Paul Arriola scored the third. Taufic Guarch scored the honor goal for Tecos.
