The Mexico City based Pumas UNAM did a number on Delfines with a 3-0 win in the return leg of fixture 1 of the Clausura 2014 Copa MX at the Olimpico Universitario Stadium at the university campus. The felinos have not been doing well in the last couple of tournaments in La Liga MX prompting the team faithful to jeer the team at the end of games.

Pumas is considered one of the big four teams in Mexico alongside Club America, Cruz Azul and Chivas de Guadalajara. But the team has suffered through a crisis in recent years as they struggle in the domestic league. In fact, all big four teams have struggled, with America and Cruz Azul recently emerging from their crisis.

The Clausura 2013 saw the revival of Cruz Azul, team that won the Copa MX and America, winners of La Liga MX. The downward spiral continued for Pumas and Chivas. The universitarios lifted the league cup at the end of the Clausura 2011 and have slowly been descending in league play. This is unusual for this team which recently exported high talent players like Hector Moreno, RCD Espanyol; Efrain Juarez, Celtic FC; and Pablo Barrera, West Ham United. Their overall best export being Hugo Sanchez to Atletico Madrid then Real Madrid in the 1980s.

While Pumas defeated a lowly Delfines from the Ascenso MX division, it could be a start to a revival if they manage to move ahead in the competition. Cruz Azul won the Clausura 2013 version of the cup and went on to face America in the finals. Since, the maquina cementera has managed to fare well in the tournament and appears to have recovered from the struggles.

It appears that for now the victory has saved manager Jose Luis Trejo for another week. ESPN Deportes recently published an article in which Sanchez, who led Pumas to back-to-back championships in 2004, had voiced interest in leading his former squad. Trejo is walking on thin ice, with “Hugol” shaking things up. For now, the 3-0 win over lowly Delfines gives Trejo breathing room. The team must continue improvement or the jeers will return with Sanchez egging them on.
