Cop accused of stealing from people during a traffic stop

Most police officers are trusted public servants, who we want to believe will always do the right thing. Unfortunately, sometimes even officers of the law make poor decisions, and even commit a crime.

According to a report in Newsday, a Suffolk County police officer has now found himself on the wrong end of the law, having been accused of pulling over members of the Latino community, and then stealing money from them.

The police officer accused is a decorated officer with a long career on the force, making the accusations against him even more disturbing. He was arraigned on Friday.

If the accusations against this man are found to be true, there is no doubt that the case will bring up the question of race, since only Latinos appear to have been targeted by the police officer. Long Island communities have a history of being divided, with the Latino community on one end of the spectrum, and other people on another end. The accusations in the case may increase the divide between the Latino community and others, rather than bring us as a society closer together.

In order to truly co-exist with each other, we need to make major reforms and changes on Long Island, so that our communities are not divided.
