Unless you live off the grid it is pretty much impossible not to know that February 14th is Valentine's Day. Okay...even if you live off the grid, chances are you know.
So what to do? Always the dilemma, yes?
What if it doesn't have to be such a dilemma or require you to come up with lots of cash?
Let's face it. This "holiday" has been around for a long, long time and it's been associated with love since the 15th century. In your writer's interesting point of view, this "holiday" is more about pleasing the gals than it is for the guys. Although, guys if you look at it as an opportunity to appreciate that special gal in your life, you are already half way there. Just sayin'!
Writing on behalf of the fairer sex (women), here's a clue guys: what we are really looking for is something you don't normally do...something outside the metaphorical box. It shows us that we are special enough to you and valuable enough to you to make an effort. Even if your effort was simply to read this article and borrow one of its suggestions. Plus, it makes it seem more like it was something you were choosing to do than something you had to do. You know...'cuz it is Valentine's Day.
Through my very unscientific poll of one, the top suggestion for this year would be the Arthur J. Will Memorial fountain at Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles (L.A.).
Although the fountain and the park have gotten facelifts since the fountain was used as the location site for the "cop a squat" scene in Pretty Woman, it may still be considered a fun and romantic destination, especially around the time that the sun is getting ready to set.
It's a perfect opportunity to compliment your gal on her being a Pretty Woman to you. It's a great photo opportunity (op). You could make it lots of fun since the expanded area of the fountain allows for you to take off your shoes and frolic in the fountain together. There is a public restroom next to the fountain. There is a Starbucks too.
You could also make this a sort of seeing the downtown sites excursion. Buy a Metro pass and stop at Pershing Square. Get out. Walk around. Take photos of the two of you. Make it a new place to hug and kiss for the first time. Stop at Union Station. Walk around. Take photos. Hug and kiss. Stop at the 7th Street Metro Center Station. Walk around. Go see all the new stuff at FIGat7th. Go see the Richard Riordan downtown library. Take photos. Hug and Kiss. You don't have to be obnoxious about all the hugging and kissing. Still. Most gals love that their guy is willing to hug and kiss in public.
Another day you could pick your favorite photo from your outing, have it printed, framed and gift it to your Valentine.
Suggestion number two: Griffith Park Observatory area, 2800 E Observatory Avenue. Pack a little romantic-style picnic in your back pack. Put on your hiking shoes. Walk the Charlie Turner Trail to Mt. Hollywood. When you reach Mt. Hollywood, there are picnic tables and one of the most priceless 360 degree views of Los Angeles. You don't have to let on that there is anything more in your back pack than water. So the whole romantic-style picnic would be a surprise. Lots of photo ops here, as well.
Suggestion number three: Santa Monica Pier, 200 Santa Monica Pier. This pier has a little something for everyone, including an amusement park and an arcade...not to mention the romance of the beach and Pacific Ocean. This pier has been entertaining huggers, kissers and couples in love for over a hundred years now. As with the other two suggestions, lots of photo ops here too.

What's really great about these suggestions is no reservations required. Go fast. Go slow. Be spontaneous. What if you looked at it as a love adventure (too corny)? So...go on...get out there and make some Valentine's Day memories. Now, what would be better than that?
