Even if you're not a baseball fan, there is much to see and do in Cooperstown, New York. For fans of art and culture, check out Fenimore Art Museum, which features a large collection of American art, folk art, and North American Indian art.
Located at 5798 State Hwy. 80, Fenimore Art Museum is situated on the western shore of Otsego Lake in a 1930s mansion. Founded in 1945, it is the home museum for the New York State Historical Association, which was established in 1899.
One of the largest exhibits is a 125,000-plus piece collection of photos representing both the advancements in photography and the visual history of the region. The Museum is also home to the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, with over 850 objects representing many of North America's indigenous cultures. Down at the lake shore, museum visitors will find an authentic Indian Bark Lodge, which demonstrates how Iroquois Indians lived in 1750.
Fenimore Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April through May and October through December (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days); it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from June through September.
