Heat Dissipater
The metal portion on the top section of this sleeve is made from aluminum. It is meant to assist in dissipating the heat from your notebook faster. I procured a non contact laser temperature reader for this sleeve and another product I'll be writing about soon. I did a few things to test out my notebook and the heat dissipation capabilities. All of which yielded the same temperature range. I started out by turning the netbook on and let it idle for twenty minutes. Then I played the standard definition digital copy of Hellboy II for the full movie which was immediately followed by 30 minutes of Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne with an eight player skirmish. I could've used benchmarks, but I wanted to use things that fulfilled two criteria:
1. Things I've used to make my netbook noticeably and almost uncomfortably hot to touch
2. Had to be a real example of what someone may use a notebook/netbook for
Rough temperature readings came in between 106-108F on a flat desktop. I performed the same test while on top of the metal sleeve and yielded a negligible difference of 104-106F. This, unfortunately, is within the temperature reader's margin of error of +/-1.8F. So the results are not significant. The benefit here though is that your sleeve can be used in your lap to avoid having all of that heat transfer to your legs. This didn't claim to be a full on cooler. If it did, I'd take issue with it, but it basically kept the netbook floating around at its normal desk surface temperature. Your mileage may vary as my netbook has little rubber feet that elevate it a bit. That could have easily affected the heat dissipation performance. .jpg)
Conclusion
The Coolermaster Choiix Ergonomic Metal Sleeve fulfills its functions without much questioning. If the sleeve is being used as a surface on your legs, then the metal portion is doing its job by preventing the heat from a notebook from transferring and combing with your own body heat. I know this job can be fulfilled by things you have lying around your house, but it's a nice option to take the notebook out of its holder and immediately have your surface ready. The sleeve makes for an overall good buy. I've purchased cases with far less utility for close to the price of this unit. This item is being sold for $34.99 at the CM Store and Newegg.
