Cooler temps and wind for lower elevations, heavy snow for Colorado’s mountains

Sunday brings a continuation of the same pattern we have seen much of this season: Dry conditions to the east while the west reaps a bounty of snow.

For the Denver area today it will be cooler than yesterday but temperatures will still be above normal. We will have partly cloudy skies above. The real story is going to be the wind.

Gusty winds will develop this morning and be peaking my mid-afternoon and continue through tonight and Monday morning. This afternoon is expected to bring gusts to 40 mph in town. A High Wind Warning is in effect for the foothills where gusts may reach 80 mph.

How will that wind affect today’s playoff game between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers? Check back later this morning for our game forecast.

Up in the high country snow will begin falling this morning and last through the night. Areas along and north of I-70 will be heaviest hit, some places receiving up to a foot of the white stuff between this morning and tomorrow evening. Coupled with that snow will be strong winds.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the north central mountains and a Winter Weather Advisory for North and Middle Parks.

Looking ahead, overall conditions for the Mile High City this week will feature temperatures at or above normal and dry conditions.

See the image for today’s outlook and keep an eye on those winds with our current conditions page here.
