If you are a Central Iowa music fan, this will be a great week for you. The week is jam-packed with great shows, including Buckwheat Zydeco, Slightly Stoopid, Trampled Under Foot, Experience Hendrix, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Kicking off this big week will be The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. The Rev and company will play Vaudeville Mews Monday night, March 10, at 9 p.m. with Des Moines/Indianola blues/soul group Stutterin' Jimmy & The Goosebumps. Tickets for the 21-and-over show are $10.
The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band has a unique take on country blues. A proponent of Fingerstyle guitar, "Reverend" Josh Peyton plays the bass line with his thumb and the melody with his other fingers on his classic 20's and 30's guitars. His wife "Washboard" Breezy Peyton plays the washboard so aggressively that the band sells the broken shards as souvenirs. Drummer Ben "Bird Dog" Bussell plays a drum kit fitted with a five gallon bucket and claims that The RPBDB is the only band with a bucket endorsement deal.
Together, the Big Dam Band has charted Top 5 Blues albums and played some of the nation's top festivals and venues. They were voted the best band on the Van's Warped Tour in 2010 by the crew, bands, and promoters. They have also played Austin City Limits, SXSW, the Telluride Blues Festival, Bonnaroo, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and Bikes, Blues & Barbecue.
