Just a couple counties away from Baltimore is Montgomery County, Maryland ... a whole other world.

In the heart of the county is Timpano's Italian Chophouse in Rockville.  It's the only place in Maryland that you will get to enjoy its fare, which has a unique take and flair with the classic chop house concept. It's the kind of place where you can go in shorts or in cocktail attire and be equally at ease. I was happy to be invited to check out their menu. Live bands play on the weekend, adding to the festive nature. Of course, as a chophouse, they take well-justified pride in their meat, including bone-in steaks and veal chops. They're simply prepared and seasoned, with a hearty char. Here's a secret that's not so secret... their black cast iron skillet roasted mussels. You could eat these for lunch or dinner (or both) every day, they're so great. Olive oil, flaky sea salt, and bowls of melted butter are swoon- worthy. A dessert concept that's perfect for the warm weather we're experiencing are the frozen cheesecake lollipops that are available in 3 or 6 lollipop sizes. So smart, having a cool little taste of something sweet after a larger meal.

For those occasions that you want to do the ladies' luncheon, special occasion celebration, or proper celebration in a glorious natural setting, head to the Comus Inn housed in a historic building in the shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain. It has classic American fare done in an elegant way and great seasonal specials, like dinner for 4 for $68.

You've seen world-famous chef Jose Andres on PBS (Made in Spain) and in all kinds of media outlets. He has several chi-chi restaurants, including one that highlights molecular gastronomy. Jaleo in Bethesda, Maryland, is a traditional tapas restaurant that has Andres' take on several menu items. He is able to procure exotic hams, etc., that are hard to find, including acorn-fed Iberico/Serrano hams. I was told that they are actually very healthy for you, with lots of anti-oxidants. It has a cool, casual vibe and makes for a perfect Sunday brunch.

Blair Mansion Inn is a historic mansion/restaurant that was purposefully built on the very, very edge of the state of Maryland. They have both a la carte and buffet meals and might even start doing brunch this Fall. I was happy to be invited to sample their experience. On certain nights, they have a cute, family-friendly murder mystery along with the something-for-everyone buffet of homemade goodies. Lots of people go there for special occasions like birthday parties, and their parties add to your party.

Hank Dietle's (11010 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland) proudly proclaims that the only food that they serve now is "hanging from the wall" (Utz' potato chips), but it's a cool real deal joint with live bands on weekends that will make you forget uniform sameness. You can hoist a few on the porch and feel right at home in this working man's bar.

Jaleo sparkles with great Spanish cuisine! Thanks, Tamar, for capturing it so perfectly...
