There was a lot of interest in the unique cloud set up this morning across northern Maryland. After another overcast morning, there appeared to be a distinct carving of the clouds as some clearing tried to develop. Some described the clouds as rolling, very long, cutting across the entire sky.
I had posted a weather map on my Facebook page showing a ‘dirty’ High Pressure system (see the last image in the slide show). Typically this weather pattern would bring a clear sky. But due to a steady light wind off of the Atlantic Ocean, the moisture combined with cool temperatures overnight helped to develop the clouds. This can be thought of as a marine layer. Sometimes it is rather thick with fog and drizzle, but other times it is just a layer of low stratus clouds.
During the morning, the sun helps to warm the ground and mix the air. This can break up the clouds or push them around, essentially eroding them away. See the multiple views of this phenomenon this morning across our region in the slide show. I’ve also included a late morning visible satellite image. This shows the unique way the clouds appeared to be carved out in the sky.
