Cooking with kids: pizza

There is something really special about grandfathers and granddaughters cooking together. Our granddaughter decided she wanted to save her “PopPop” some money by securing him a recipe for pizza so he would not have to spend all his money to go pick up pizzas for us when she has an overnight stay.

This particular recipe was found on www.pbskids.org/calilou and is part of a game my granddaughter plays on that site. She has determined she and her PopPop should make the pizza together since he is the one who will be saving money as a result of her finding the recipe and bringing it home. No word yet on his thoughts on the matter (but I suspect she will win).

Ingredients:

  • ½ pound (300 grams) pizza dough or short crust pastry
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • A few black olives
  • 3 ounces (100 grams) mushrooms
  • ½ sliced green pepper
  • 1 pinch of oregano
  • 1 ½ ounce (50 grams) of mozzarella cheese
  • Additional grated cheese, if desired (gruyere, emmental, parmesan…)
  • Optional: slices of ham, artichoke hearts, capers or egg on top

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F
  2. Lay the dough on a pizza pie plate and spread half the tomato sauce
  3. Arrange the ham slices or other toppings
  4. Cover with the rest of the tomato sauce
  5. Arrange green pepper, mushroom and olive slices, mozzarella, (extra cheese) and oregano
  6. Bake for 20 minutes
