Cooking with kids: fruit salad

Start with two apples
Start with two apples

My granddaughter has recently shown an interest in helping me cook. She just has one stipulation: she wants to pick the recipe. Saturday, I learned how she would make her selections.

Many different fruits in this salad

While she was playing a game, Calilou, on, she discovered some dishes she thought would be proper for the entire family. She even noted who she thought should help her make “which dish that sounded delicious.”

The first recipe she printed off for me was for this refreshing fruit salad. The recipe originates from the Cookie Jar (2006) by Ed Chouette.

  • 2 apples
  • 2 oranges
  • 1 melon
  • 1 basket of strawberries
  • 1 bunch of grapes
  • 2 kiwis
  • Fruit of your choice: banana, mango, watermelon …
  • 1 cup (100 grams) powdered (icing) sugar
  • Juice of one lemon
  • Juice of two oranges
  • A few mint leaves

  1. Skin or peel fruit and cut into small cubes
  2. Place all cut fruit into a large fruit or salad bowl
  3. Add sugar, lemon juice and orange juice
  4. Toss lightly
  5. Allow to set in refrigerator
  6. Decorate with mint leaves and serve cold
