Cooking with Devin Starr: Asian style lettuce wraps (Photos)

Independent wellness coach, Devin Starr, was featured in a January 2013 article of the Phoenix Healthy Food Examiner.

Starr shared his 56 pound weight loss testimony and explained how eating healthier meals with proper exercise can help accelerate the body’s metabolism throughout the day.

On Feb. 28, 2013, Starr met with Phoenix Healthy Food Examiner, Tiffani Maynor to create a low-calorie Asian style dish.

Ground Turkey, shredded carrots, black pepper, water chestnuts, green onions, dry sherry, hoisin and Kikkoman’s low-sodium soy sauce are mixed and stir fried in olive oil.

Two to three tablespoons of the seasoned ground turkey is placed in the center of a few sheets of lettuce and wrapped individually. Each wrap is less than 200 calories, loaded with protein, and contains other nutrients like zinc.

“Eating foods high-in-protein and low-carb is the key to burning fat,” says Starr. “People should not exclude carbohydrates from their diet because the body needs the fuel to burn. When people deprive themselves of the carbohydrates their body needs, they start feeling fatigued, blood glucose levels become deficient and other health related problems occur.”

Although Starr’s recipe calls for ground turkey, ground black beans and garbanzo beans together with mushrooms. Stir fry mixture with Asian spices to create a high protein vegetarian meal.

Soy beans, Boca ground crumbles, tuna or shrimp with brown rice may be used in place of ground turkey. Organic green tower lettuce was used to make the Asian wraps. Feel free to use any type of lettuce; rinse lettuce before use.

As a wellness coach for a popular nutrition brand, Starr professionally works with clients on an individual basis. A wellness evaluation is conducted and a plan is created to meet each client’s specific needs.
