Cooking for your dog need not be difficult or complicated. An easy recipe that is sure to please is chicken stew. Here is a basic recipe that you can cook in a slow cooker while you and your dog go on a favorite walk or do chores on a weekend.
1 whole chicken
1 sweet potato, peeled and diced
2 carrots, scrubbed and chopped
1 small zuchinni, chopped
1 small yellow squash, chopped
1/2 cup green beans, ends cut off and cut into 1/2" pieces
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 cup peas
1 cup oatmeal
leaves from a sprig of rosemary, chopped fine
optional ingredients that are essential if you feed this often:
1 Tbsp seaweed calcium powder (Animal Essentials is a good brand)
1 tsp ground kelp (use high quality kelp from the health food store)
Add all ingredients to the slow cooker with enough water to cover the chicken. Cover and cook for 6-8 hours, or until chicken is done all the way through and meat falls off the bone. Allow to cool and debone the chicken being very careful to remove all of the small bones. This is the most important step in this recipe. It is essential that you remove ALL of the bones, even the little tiny ones. You may want to line a bowl with a plastic grocery bag to throw the bones into so you can carry them out to the trash when you are finished. Using a hand-held blender, mix the ingredients until chicken in nicely shredded and intermixed throughout the liquid. Spoon portions into a glass or plastic container. Keep enough out for about 3 days of meals and freeze the rest until ready to use.
