Okay, who doesn’t love chocolate chip cookies? Of all the types of cookies in the world, chocolate chip is probably a hands-down favorite with almost everyone. Now take that plain old chocolate chip cookie and dress it up a bit – hard to believe but true, here’s a way to take chocolate chip cookies to a whole other level.

These cookie bars have been entered into many contests and won first place multiple times! The woman who invented the recipe claims that the judges usually ask for the recipe. Once you try them, you will know why. If you can make them last for more than one day, they actually taste better the second day.

An ingredient in this recipe is sweetened condensed milk. Basically this is milk from which all water has been removed and sugar has been added. This is why it is thicker and richer than other canned milk. Be careful not to confuse it with evaporated milk (from which about 60% of the water has been removed, but isn’t sweetened).

Award-winning Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar Recipe

Ingredients for Award-winning Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars:

  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups chocolate chips, divided
  • 1 can (14-ounce) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Directions for making Award-winning Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13 baking dish.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and butter until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in ½ cup of the chocolate chips. Press the mixture evenly on the bottom of the prepared dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Combine the sweetened condensed milk, the egg, vanilla, remaining chocolate chips and nuts (if using).

Once the crust has been removed from the oven, spread the milk mixture evenly over the hot crust. Return to the oven and bake for 20 – 25 minutes or until light golden brown on top. Cool completely before cutting into bars.
