Thousands of runners and walkers completed the 2009 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure yesterday in Dallas. After weeks of wet and rainy weather, participants in the Race for the Cure enjoyed sunshine and pleasant temperatures as they raised money and awareness to battle breast cancer.
Several local runners displayed a blistering pace for the timed 5K run. According to the official results, Melissa Cook from Flower Mound was the overall women's winner, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 16:26. Kip Kangogo was the overall men's winner, crossing the line in 14:24 -- a pace of 4:37 per mile. Logan Sherman of Dallas finished a close second in 14:54, followed by Koby Styles of Holliday in third.
Several breast cancer survivors also displayed impressive performances. Gennifer Stratton of Plano was the overall women's winner among survivors, finishing in 22:40. Survivors Tawni Luke and Rebecca Martin finished in 22:51 and 23:03 respectively.
Of course, the Race for the Cure is about more than just running. The fundraising associated with the event helps fund breast cancer education, treatment and screening programs throughout Dallas. In fact, $1.8 million was spent on these programs in Dallas last year, thanks to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the funds raised at the Race for the Cure. As of October 18, 2009, the Dallas County Komen affiliate has raised $884,882 in 2009, thanks largely to the efforts of Race for the Cure participants.
