Cook County understands the importance of getting your pets spayed or neutered. Not only is it healthier for the animal, but it reduces strays and unwanted litters which cost taxpayers thousands of dollars each year. ABC 7 News reported on Feb. 4, 2013 that during the month of February, pet owners in Cook County will receive a $40 discount on spay and neuter procedures for their dogs or cats.
Why spay/neuter
Spaying or neutering your pet keeps them healthy. In males it helps to curtail unwanted behaviors such as marking. It also reduces the risk of certain cancers. Female pets benefit from not having unwanted litters. Pet owners with spayed females do not have to deal with the mess of their pet going into heat.
Millions of unwanted dogs and cats are destroyed every year because shelters are overpopulated. This comes at a high cost to taxpayers. Shelters that euthanize animals to make room for the never ending influx of new animals spend thousands of taxpayer money every year. Getting your pet spayed or neutered prevents pet overpopulation.
In many areas feral cats are a huge problem. They kill local song birds and other wildlife. Feral cats continually breed which feeds the problem. They spread feline HIV and other diseases to pet cats that are allowed to roam outdoors.
