The life of a champion is one of constant travel, different opponents with varying styles and always having to be on your guard. A champion has to be on his game every night, adapting to the nuances of every opponent while trying to maintain control of the match from the pacing to the moves to adapting to the opportunity to capitalize on an opponents’ mistake while trying not to make one yourself that would cost you the title.
“Ironman” Rob Conway has been one of the most in-demand NWA World Heavyweight Champions in years and as he gets ever closer to his first year as champion, he has had to overcome the odds more than once to escape with his title.
Conway won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in the midst of a conundrum of controversy surrounding the NWA governing body. Antagonists were rallying that the new regime of the NWA, Bruce Tharpe and Chris Ronquillo would be the death of the organization, they were making mistake after mistake and eventually many believed the NWA would be no more.
When Rob Conway, a former two time WWE Tag Team Champion and considered the upper echelon of training school Ohio Valley Wrestling, won the title people were torn on whether he was the proper choice to lead the NWA. Since that time opinions have changed greatly about Conway as champion with many considering him one of the best to hold the title in the last decade. While there are still detractors Conway continues to prove he is not only a fighting champion but is also willing to defend the belt and the NWA in Japan and across the globe.
Conway is an enigma in the business of professional wrestling finding his way into the sport by simply watching a live event and telling himself that he could do better than those he saw in the ring one night. He took it upon himself to train, workout and rise above the mediocrity and had the mindset that he would be a superstar in the wrestling business.
A gifted athlete and sometimes competitive bodybuilder Conway has taken the NWA World Heavyweight Champion back into the spotlight and is slowly making sure the coveted title will once again be the most prized trophy in all of sports.
With several trips to Japan under his belt already and more scheduled for after the New Year, Conway continues to defend the belt against any challenger who may step up. In a recent trip to Japan Conway and monster Jax Dane won the NWA World Tag Team Championship making Conway a dual World Champion.
As opponent after opponent goes down in defeat there are three or four more who are clamoring for a title match including NWA World-Wide Wrestling strongman Cueball Carmichael, who many feel could be one of the toughest tests Conway will face. Former NWA Eastern States Champion Lou Marconi has also made it known that he wants to meet Conway in the ring as well. Current NWA National Heavyweight Champion Phil “Nitro” Monahan would also like a chance at the Ten Pounds of Gold.
“When I dispatch Nitro and take the National title from him then Conway will be next, count on that,” Marconi said.
“My match with Rob Conway will be one for the ages. I am getting into the best shape of my career just to take that title away from him. Don’t get me wrong Rob Conway is a helluva competitor and a great champion but I am just that much better,” Carmichael said.
“I won the National title and nobody that it would happen so what are they going to think when I take the gold from Conway?” Monahan said.
Conway has made his presence felt in NWA Smoky Mountain, NWA CIW, NWA WWW, NWA Houston, NWA Next Level and so many more and continues to tour the country defending his NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
Being the life of a champion is not easy but Rob Conway would not have it any other way.
