Ariel Castro, the Cleveland kidnapper who held three women captive for over a decade, has been found dead, apparently due to suicide, according to The Cleveland Leader.
JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Dept. of Corrections released a statement saying he was found hanging in his cell at around 9:20 pm on Sept. 3, 2013.
Castro, 52, was being housed in protective custody after being convicted last month of over 900 charges related to the kidnapping and torture of three young women. Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for abducting and sexually assaulting Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus, according to the Leader.
After Castro was found, the medical staff at the prison attempted to save his life. He was then transported to the Ohio State University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm reports the Leader.
Smith also noted in her statement that a “thorough review” of Castro’s death is “underway.”
