Controvery sparked by Julie Chen eye surgery revelation

Julie Chen sparked some debate in the Asian community when she revealed that she underwent eye surgery in the early years of her career. While working as a reporter, Chen was said to have been approached by a news director stating the reason her career didn’t seem to be taking off was because of her appearance.

On The Talk, Chen stated, “He said, ‘Let’s face it Julie, how relatable are you to our community? How big of an Asian community do we have in Dayton? On top of that, because of your Asian eyes, I’ve noticed that when you’re on camera, you look disinterested and bored.”

Chen received further backlash from an agent, who suggested to her that she have eye surgery. She went on to say, “He said, ‘I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to make your eyes look bigger.”

Chen shared a before and after photo with audiences to show the dramatic difference to her eyes after the surgery.

Many Asians are familiar with this type of surgery because it is something that is looked at as taboo in many Asian circles. However, it’s not the eye surgery that is getting the most criticism. Many have taken to the blogs, stating that Chen is not divulging all of the surgery she underwent. In fact, many people believe that she underwent further surgery to correct her Asian nose, cheekbones and chin as well.

Chen received so much backlash over her drastic change in appearance, she took a video of herself getting her makeup done to help quell the rumors that she did indeed have more plastic surgery on her face.

Chen has stated that her nose seems to look more contoured, not through plastic surgery, but from makeup techniques to make it look more defined.

Take a look for yourself and feel free to share your thoughts on her surgery revelation.
