Controversial call helps Westchester advance in the Open Division

Most times the road team does not get the benefit of a close call, but that is what exactly happened to Westchester as they escaped Fresno with a 60-58 victory over Bullard in the first round of the CIF State Open Division boys’ basketball playoffs.

Bullard had the ball with 5.2 seconds left when Corey Silverstrom drove the lane and his missed shot appeared to be tipped in at the buzzer by Calvin Young. However, the officials waved off the game-tying basket giving the Comets the win and avenging their 68-53 loss from a season ago.

Westchester (29-6) led throughout the game until a 12-0 run late in the third quarter gave Bullard a 45-44 advantage.

The game was tied at 48 at the end of the third quarter before the Comets went on a 12-3 run before Bullard (27-3) rallied back.

Westchester will travel to face No. 2 seed Etiwanda (27-2) who had a bye.
