Controversial bill defeated

In a victory for gay rights activists and supporters everywhere, a controversial bill proposed in Arizona has been defeated by the governor.

The bill, which made national news last week when it was sent to Arizona governor Jan Brewer for consideration, would have allowed business owners throughout Arizona state to deny service to people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, based on their religious beliefs.

For example, if the bill had passed, a bakery owner would be able to refuse to make a cake for a same sex-couple. Similar bills have been proposed in several other states, without very much success.

The bill had earned massive amounts of criticism, since many people believed that the bill would enable people to discriminate against others.

Fortunately, the bill will not be put into law.
