“…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Phil 4:11)

Famous words of Paul. How can he feel contentment when his life was consumed by so many adversities – many years in prison, shipwreck, beatings, the constant knowledge that many of his adversaries wanted him dead? Because he looked at his circumstances with the correct godly perspective: “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things” (Phil 3:8). He heard God’s call, he followed in obedience, knowing that “… in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Rom 8:28). In all things. So each adversity that Paul experienced – he knew – served a purpose in God’s plan for his life. And so with us. In all things, God has a purpose. He will cause, or allow, various circumstances into our lives as part of an overall plan He has for us. We may not understand what that purpose or plan is – perhaps for many months or years, or perhaps even this side of the grave. But if we embrace the above principals with complete trust in God, our relationship with our Lord and Savior will continue to grow through our trials – and what can be more important, and satisfying, than that?

“ These [trials] have come so that your faith – of greater wroth than gold - …. May be proved genuine.” (1 Peter 1:7)
