The film's director Rueben Martell says, “I wanted to make a native love story with a sense of community and that is what I am doing in this instant. What I felt was really important to me in making this project work was to go "Method" and make it small and intimate with a group of people that felt the same and I found the people. I just need to find some more funds.”
Martell is from Canada & he says that, “My goal for this campaign is $4,500. Where the money is going is in accommodations and transportation for the actors. I have one in BC, another in Ontario and the other in Alberta. I know what you are thinking. Why so far for actors? Two words. 'Union' and 'Passion.' People always see a role as a pay cheque, and they should. But I didn't want this to be the focus. I wanted them to be passionate about it.”
The impact of this production is important to Martell. He says, “By contributing to this campaign, you help by taking us to a different level in story telling. I haven't felt that there has been a native film that wasn't about a cause or strife. Why hasn't there been a film about being human? Being in love?”
“I have watched most films and the stereotype has been put at the forefront with explanations of why we are the way we are. I always felt that explaining ourselves to ourselves was just odd and didn't describe me to people.”
“With 'A Life Less Empty' I just want to make a film without feeling guilty about our human habits with our normal human interactions. To mirror ourselves to other people is to show we are human. We're no different and we need people to understand that.”
“I just want to follow a different path of storytelling that isn't beyond anyone's grasp and very attainable. I want to be the first step to people believing that it can be done by anyone if you have a passionate story to tell.”
