The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning about a mold risk associated with the Fisher-Price Newborn Rock `N Play Sleepers. The warning applies to 800,000 sleepers sold at stores and online beginning September 2009. The sleepers, designed for infants up to 25 pounds, feature a removable plastic cushion with a removable fabric cover in a tubular metal rocking frame.
Mold can develop between the cushion and the hard plastic frame if the sleeper remains wet or is not cleaned frequently. Mold is associated with respiratory illnesses and other infections. Fisher-Price has received 600 reports of mold, and 16 infants have been treated for respiratory problems, coughs and hives after they were in the Fisher-Price sleepers.
The agency said consumers should check under the seat cushion for dark brown, gray or black spots. If mold is found, they should stop using the product and contact Fisher-Price at (800) 432-5437 for cleaning instructions or other assistance
