Over the past year the Panamanian Ministry of Transportation has been making major improvements on the condition of the Pan-American Highway. Typically one side of the highway is worked on at a time. The surface is torn up and replaced, with new lines being painted soon after. These improvements are greatly helping the condition of the road, but may be dangerous to travelers.
Construction currently is occurring in the road that connects Panama City and the Pan-American Highway, bypassing Chorrera. Traffic is slowed during rush hours and when it is raining. Be prepared for stoppage or slowing of traffic when traveling in this area. New construction also is being started near Penonomé.
Along the whole highway use caution when it is raining. This is especially important is the areas where construction workers are present or where the lines have not been repainted.
The construction on the highway is making it much easier to traffic. Simply use caution to ensure your safety during this period of improvement.
