Students from Helen Cordero Elementary School assisted Mayor Richard Berry and City councilors at the ground breaking ceremony on December 11, 2013 for the new public library on Central and Unser. The new library will be about 25,000 square feet and will cost an estimated $8.3 million. The library was designed by Rohde May Keller McNamara Architecture and will be built by HP Construction. Artist renditions of the new library are available online. The site of the new library is adjacent to a Rapid Ride transit center and a UNM medical clinic. According to an article by the Albuquerque Journal, the new library will have "book collections for adults and children, group rooms, reading areas, activity and meeting space and more than 40 computers" and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

With the opening of the new library, two smaller libraries on the southwest side of town, Alamosa and Westgate, will close after their resources have been transferred to the new library. This new library will provide services to the southwest portion of Albuquerque that has historically received only limited library services. The new library will provide meeting spaces and weekend hours that have not been available with the current library facilities.
